Actor Yoon Shi-yoon surprised viewers with an honest and heartfelt confession during his June 1 appearance on SBS’s variety show My Little Old Boy. Known for his disciplined lifestyle and clean-cut image, Yoon revealed a deeply personal reason for suddenly leaving Korea last year: to study English in the Philippines.
Midway through a casual dinner with the show’s cast, Yoon abruptly stood up and rushed off, it was time for his online English class. This glimpse into his rigorous daily routine, which also includes extreme kitchen tidiness and dopamine reduction practices, hinted at a man on a serious mission of self-improvement.

“One day, my mom gave me an English textbook, and I looked at myself on a variety show,” Yoon recounted. “I realized I couldn’t speak English at all. I felt pathetic.” He continued, “There are so many situations on set that require speaking with foreign staff. I wasn’t prepared. I was ashamed and regretful of how lazy I’d been.”
Yoon said the realization led to a turning point. He decided to leave Korea for the Philippines to immerse himself in English training, aiming to break through the language barrier that had cost him international opportunities. “I didn’t want to miss any more chances,” he explained.
Now back in Korea, his living room is filled with English textbooks, and studying the language has become part of his everyday life. Even the hosts of My Little Old Boy were visibly impressed by his extreme self-discipline and motivation to grow.
